Greta Garbo - "The (Gay) Face"

Born Greta Lovisa Gustafsson in Stockholm, Sweden, to a working-class family, she became one of the greatest and most glamorous movie stars of the 1920's-1930's.
Starting her film career in silent pictures, she was nicknamed "The Face", and was one of very few actresses who transitioned successfully to "talkies".
She was also famous for shunning publicity, which became part of her mystique. No doubt this was in part due to the fact that she preferred her lovers to be women. At a time when any public hint of homosexuality about a star spelled box office death, it is no surprise that she went to great lengths to conceal her private life.
Garbo's personal letters, recently released to the public, indicate that she remained in love with Mimi Pollak, her drama school sweetheart, for the rest of her life. When Pollak announced she was pregnant, Garbo wrote: "We cannot help our nature, as God has created it. But I have always thought you and I belonged together." Garbo's biographer Barry Paris notes that she was "technically bisexual, predominantly lesbian, and increasingly asexual as the years went by." It has been indicated that Garbo struggled greatly with her sexuality, only becoming involved with other women in affairs that she could control.
Sadly, victimized by homophobia and it's accompanying fear, she paid a high price for her fame by living much of her life isolated and alone without the comfort of a loving life partner.

I feel so sorry for her and the fact that she had to go threw her life hiding her true feelings. If it is true that she dated those women, she had great taste :)

Most of the information about the women in her life has come from biographies of Garbo and of them in which they made references to intimacy with Garbo. Of course, some of it may be fabricated, but all of these women themselves were more or less known in Hollywood for being bisexual or lesbian themselves. So, I believe most of it to be true. And, yes, Garbo did have good taste :)
