I love Heidegger. I think you should have suggested Kant and then Husserl and then Heidegger, Sartre as dessert. But your summation is correct, the existentialists help us get past Descartes and his meditations. If you're into Phil of Science, I suggest Laudan, Kuhn, and Popper.

That's why Descartes changed 'Cogito Ergo Sum' to 'Cogito, Sum' (so as not to imply logical connection). He realized the mistake, and unfortunately people ran with the initial Cogito Ergo Sum, misunderstading Descartes position.

Uhh... we can't every 'know' anything in an objective, absolute, certain sense. We can, however, make practical assumptions about the world that aid us in our dealings with it. Just because we can't 'know' something doesn't mean it is pointless to seek out knowledge, for the reason I mentioned above.

um not sure if u meant to say this but Locke did not "start" the idea of a tabula rasa. Such notions were discussed in Aristotle and on to Aquinas

I'd recommend Ryle's Concept of Mind, rather than dealing with the ontological commitments of the phenomenologists. Oh, and Sartre was a Cartesian (Being and Nothingness shows this).

The Locke-Berkeley transition is one of my favorite to teach, hands down. The moderns are great.
