On February 21, 1993, NC State honored the 1983 NCAA Championship basketball team in Reynolds Coliseum. Their coach Jim Valvano was working the game for ABC and gave this speech before a standing room only crowd. This speech precluded his famous ESPY speech. He died of cancer on April 28, 1993 .

People have asked me where I got this footage from, I sat in the upper half of Reynolds Coliseum with my own camera and taped the speech never thinking that anyone but close friends would ever see it. I recently uploaded the entire ceremony on YouTube. It is in six parts and can be found by clicking on my username.

Valvano was a great coach. Although human. Tell me anyone who has never made mistakes. V's mistake was that he did not think he had to babysit some of his players, but as it turned out, he should have. Players sold tickets and shoes, that is what put NCSU on probation.

I met Jimmy V once at a golf tournament years ago. I'm an old marine that served in the Gulf. I never said a word. I felt out of place. I was there on an invite for some reason. I didn't fit in and I knew it. He came over and shook my hand and said thanks to me. I can't forget that. I followed basketball and I knew he was really sick, but not to that point. Now, I look back and I've had a heart transplant. No other coach came over and thanked me in 1991.

These money-grubbing 'journalists' are the reason Jimmy V was forced to resign for basically nothing in terms of what was going on at EVERY OTHER SCHOOL. Don't believe most of the garbage you read. It is usually motivated by SALES not character, especially if written by a 'professional'.

Being a UNC fan is easy... LOL. Try being a Wolfpacker for a week and you'll see what it really means to stick with your team through ANYTHING... like sucking for almost 20 years now! Although I DREAM of another Wolfpack championship, I wouldn't trade 1983 and the cardiac kids for FIFTY IN A ROW. It was the wildest and most unbelievable ride to a championship in any sport EVER. No team ever came from so low AND almost lost so many times to get the GRAIL! JIMMY V should ALREADY be in the HALL.

The NCAA brought the "hammer down" not because of Jimmy V but after initial accusations where proven false it was found that some players had sold comp tixs and shoes. Something most every athlete did back in the day.
NYTimes: The National Collegiate Athletic Association put North Carolina State's basketball team on two years' probation today and barred it from the 1990 N.C.A.A. tournament for violations that included the misuse of complimentary tickets and sneakers provided to the players.
