I wish they wouldn't always use the actual Latin Ave Maria text for this song. Schubert composed this to a song/prayer from "Lady of the Lake" by Walter Scott. It goes together with the music so beautifully, whether in the Original or in the german translation that Schubert used. The latin text sounds to me a bit forced to fit the melody.

I could be completely wrong, but isn't this the Bach/Gonoud's Ave Maria, not the Schubert? Of course, Renee sounds gorgeous as always.

That's not the Schubert Version. That's Bach/Gounod.
Both versions are excellent. Bach/Gounod is sweeter, Schubert is more powerful. Check out Schubert's version performed by Pavarotti. It gives me the creeps.

Sorry to contradict, but the bach/gounod version is bach's first prelude with the "ave maria"'s lyrics in latin. Here this is the Schubert version (ave maria+ german lyrics) arranged for orchestra that's all. I know both versions and I have the music scores for both and I can definitely say that THIS is Schubert's version.

What can I say - this lady is incredible. When she hits those high notes it sends a shiver down my back. I have listened to several of her videos on this site and felt the same reaction every time. She has such control one doesn't even see her take a breath, as with some supranos - AND she is absolutely beautiful (and I'm a woman saying that). I would love to see her live and will definitely look up her itinerary. She is simply amazing.

This is the Schubert version, but not with the original lyrics--she's singing the Latin prayer. The song was originally written with German lyrics translated from a Sir Walter Scott poem, but nowadays, as here, the Latin litany is often substituted for the original words.
