happened to me too, but I didnt microwave my cd... It was a old Command&Conquer cd and a beat up cd-rom drive... It was ruined aswell but didnt really matter :D

the only way that happens, according to many factory tests, is if the CD has more than a 5% warp, usually caused by heat such as extreme exposure to sunlight, (or microwave), if the CD drive was rotated causing extreme gyroscopic force, or the CD was physically scratched or damaged, or if the drive has a improper vibration buffer such as in this video.. but hav fun with exploding CDs.. (thats why CD drives r metal rofl)

In my case a motocross madness CD exploded, apparently there was a crack that went through half of the disk, and so i wanted to play, tried to read, then BANG! 100's or pieces of MX madness in my newish dvd burner. Luckily the drive is fine, after cleaning out most of the pieces by opening the drive and shaking it around.

i already don't use CD's at all. I'd sell all my DVD movies if i could get full bitrate digital format. Storing or carrying physical albums everywhere is a pain.

I always laughed at a friend who told me he had this happen to him while playing Diablo II. I was online with him and he had to quit the game because his 'cd exploded.'
I never believed him until now. This was years before MythBusters.

Thats not 52x drive genius. They put the cd's on a hi speed drill motor!
52x drives spin "up-to" 10,000 RPM well below the 25,000 needed to shatter a disc.

Yeah, just like your PC, the one you used to post that comment can explode.
That is, if you overclock the CPU enough, if you're unlucky.
however, leave stuff alone and work well within the safe limits (52x is very safe, it's been used for many many years with no problems)

The high speed wobbling edge is really scary!!! A classmate once told me that his friend experienced a DVD explosion during a LAN party. DVD drive was completely ruined! Luckily nobody got hit by the fragments which were all kept inside the drive.
The outer edge of the CD on this vid had a speed of 351 miles per hour at 25'000 RPM!!!
