I actually like dessay more because she just makes it look so easy, Gruberova tries too hard on some of this high notes in some of the movies of her sing, and I think her tone get's a little too nasal. Gruberova is definitely one of the best, but I think Dessay IS the best.

Why on earth do people have to compare opera performers (Divas)? Who cares! We should just enjoy what each individual singer brings to a perfomance. Edita Gruberova is simply an amazing artist period.

Well, Sutherland already stopped at age 54 and I've heared & seen recordings of her last performing years and they do not compare in ay way to Gruberova at this age!

Well, you are obviously confused. She continued until age 64. Her last recording years were in her SIXTIES, the voice was weakening and the top notes had an edge. Her last good Lucias were just before her 60th birthday.....Australia. Listen for yourself here on Youtube....Tales of Hoffman Trio ..age 61. You will see you are mistaken.

Sutherland - a great technique, no doubt, but bad diction, poor communicator, no real pianissimo, and a rather sedate stage presence are realities.

Gruberova - Mannerisms, piano excesses, over-ornamentation, holes in the low register, weak middle, screeched forte (After 1985), mannered actress with about 2 expressions, scoops, moans, gasps and other unmusical ticks are realities as well.

Because she gave great performances too. I.E. her Yerbinetta, Königin, Donna Anna etc. I just don't like her past 1985.

Elisabetta, do you even know what you're talking about? Sure, Sutherland was built like a truck and could sing for days on end, but Edita's coloratura/agility, acting, diction, personality onstage, etc. blow Joan Sutherland out of the water. I haven't yet found a single aria where I prefer Joan's voice to Edita's. And please, don't critique Edita's high register -- she obviously had better access than Sutherland did...

I will never forget a performance she gave with Neil Shicoff in 86 of Lucia. I saw 3 out of 6 SHOWS and she was just terrific with him, the top with clear power. Shicoff had a ringing tenor with tons of emotion and they brought the house down.

I think we can't compare Sutherland and Gruberova!They sang the same operas, but they had a different voice!Gruberova is higher than Sutherland, and Joan is most dramatic than Edita!
But I prefer Gruberova!Her high notes and hr coloratura make me very happy!*
