You're absolutely right. My comment was generally regarding the countless people who comment on opera videos with things like "I so much prefer so-and-so". My point is, what's the point? Every artist is unique and every listener's opinion is unique. I'm very happy that you prefer Sills. But why does that discount Ms. Battle, and why leave that comment here for everyone? (This is a rhetorical question for all the people who do this--please don't take it personally)

Of course it does not discount Ms Battle, I admire her by definition because she can bear the pressure of a listening audience, which I cannot do. But if one leaves a comment "Ms Blabla is better", one has the possibility to have a check and get one more point of view. I agree with uniqueness, but you should also agree with globality.
Sorry for having been a bit aggressive:-)

I also like Sills better for this aria. Battle has a wonderful instrument, but the way she positions her mouth to hit the high notes is a bit strange. She looks like a squirrel getting ready to chew on a nut. It's painful to watch.
Ah..Kathy Battle... ... ( 1 week ago by goldenthroat86)
Ah..Kathy Battle...one the great operatic CHARALTANS of all time!!! We young professional operatic singers NEVER understood why she became famous or had a career AT ALL..for that matter. James Levine( at first ) decided he loved her..the rest is history. She was consisdered a JOKE among the small community of prof. opera singers..A VERY mediocre instrument..was REJECTED as a voice major in college. Her 15 year career ended in the late 90s because she became DIVABITCH. She barely sings anymore.
The thing about ... ( 1 week ago by rosieposie1111)
The thing about Kathleen Battle is her voice is so small it could fit on the tip of my pinky but she sings with such "point" to her voice that she can be heard over the orchestra. She is a "smart" singer. I believe she studied at CCM in Cincinnati which is rated at least in the top three operatic vocal performance schools in the country.
Also, people with ... ( 1 week ago by rosieposie1111)
Also, people with notoriously big voices in person you think will be heard over the orchestra because they sound so loud in person often you cannot hear over the orchestra because they oversing or sing incorrectly. I think its amazing Kathleen Battle can be heard at the very top of Carnegie Hall even though her voice is small or "mediocre", once again it is because she has "point" and focus. That kind of discipline takes years to develop.
You can believe ... ( 1 week ago by mylandtffy)
You can believe that if you want; however, she would not have been repeatedly engaged by Karajan and Muti if she were a charlatan. Whether she was rejected as a voice major in college is immaterial.

Splicing is very common today in many recordings, not only Battle's recordings.

JuillHope17 I've read your comments on a number of youtube videos of Ms. Battle's performances. What I can't seem to understand is why you watch so many of her videos and go through the trouble of leaving foul comments if you can't stand her? I don't understand you opera fans/singers out there who get so much satisfaction out of trashing tremendously talented singers. Learning from these artists (both gifts and flaws) is one think being an obnoxious mediocre music school student is another.

I agree. Netrebko's fioratura needs work. She's much better in Puccini.

Why would she want to sound like Sills? Everyone should have their own individual sound.

Actually, tradition has dictated that both the Countess and Susanna are female. Perhaps you meant to say something else in your comment?

Were you even aware of opera--let alone alive-- in the 80s? FYI. Carol Vaness was the Countess.

Wow, so much hate, where does that come from? You must be a very unhappy person. Go wash your mouth with soap and clorox for saying such a ridiculous and laughable comment. If you are indeed a "young professional operatic singer" like you claim to be (which I seriously doubt because you speak like a neophyte) you probably speak out of jealousy as your career will NEVER be have at least 10% of the success Kathy's has had.

I apologize to the community for posting such a harsh comment against a member. I always try to keep my comments on the positive side; however this person's comment was over the top!
You are entitled to ... ( 1 week ago by TheAleph74)
You are entitled to your own opinion. However, most of the arias that she sang in the Bel Canto CD were performed live by her in many other occasions and there are private recordings of them. In those instance, obviously, there was no help from the sound engineers. What I sense here is that you don't like Kathleen Battle, which is fine, but that does not mean that what she does is a disaster, at least not for me and for many, many other music lovers.

Actually, I trained with one of the great voice teachers..Tenor Richard Miller..had master classes with Carlo Bergonzi, Sherill Milnes, Richard Bonynge, Regine Crespin, Marilyn Horne and was the youngest singer to reach the finals of Merola in NYC. Ive sung professionally througout the US and Europe. I made my debut in St. Louis in 1984 at the age of 24 in a leading role. I am NOT a neophyte. I am privileged to call Denyce Graves, David Daniels, Christopher Robertson, and others friends. U?

Yes I do. I've been studying voice for 13 years or so. However, yours or my vocal knowledge is not the point here; what caught my attention about your comment was that you didn't criticize Kathleen's technique or instrument but her career and her person and you did it in a very hateful way. I assume they didn't teach you at Yale how to show respect to your colleagues.

Because if you had, you'd know that sheer perfection cannot more clearly be defined.

Of which community of Opera singers do you speak that considered her a joke? Jessye Norman? Placido and Luciano? Fredericka von Stade? Thomas Hampson?
