Some good comments about Callas' interpretation of this piece. My mother, a coloratura soprano,studied voice at Juilliard, and after a "nice" radio performance of this piece, demonstrated what SHOULD be done with it. She said Callas was perfect - perfect singing, but she let herself sound on the edge of madness. You can hear her hovering on the brink.

Also, about Sutherland, just compare Callas' Violetta with her's. Callas has it all, and especially the looks. Mom and I listened to Sutherland singing Anna Bolena, and it was great, but Mom said if Anne Boleyn had looked like Joan Sutherland, England would be still Catholic today!

Watch Sumi Jo on another YouTube video. She doesn't have the strength of voice that Callas does in this piece, but see how she just trembles physically. You know she is just on the edge of sanity, barely keeping it together.

Well, i have to say that is true though. LOL
Callas and Sutherland were both great Bel-Canto singers. Maria Callas had the phenomenal voice and the looks. But Joan Sutherland had the great coloratura agility and those awesome trills. Anyways, we're lucky that we had them both.

Your right, I didn't see the second definition of aria (An air; a melody), I only saw the first definition (A solo vocal piece with instrumental accompaniment, as in an opera). The song is a melody, so you are right.

Well I'm from the USA too, and I agree that the international image of us is a caricature.. in the same way that Switzerland is a utopic country full of banks and prosperity and cleanliness.
I don't agree that we've "saved" the world ever. Most wars are started for economic reasons, not out of self-sacrifice.
Anyways, that's my two cents and I'll stop arguing on this beautiful aria video..if you still want to debate you can send me a message if you please?
