Unbelievable to see a country so entrenched in animal welfare still using boxes that are so unsafe and hard on the dogs. These boxes are over a decade old. The british flyball association uses "real" flyball boxes and run much faster times. Many of them refuse to compete at crufts on these boxes for the sake of their dogs.

My dogs compete at both flyball techniques, they are intelligent and find no problem in changing their technique, the KC box is well padded and those trained correctly have no problem using it without injury. Sure BFA is quicker but KC flyball is exhibition stuff and not taken as seriously by us BFA members, but training is the key, not criticism

This is a very DANGEROUS version of Flyball. I would never allow my dog to use a box that has the great potential to harm my dog.

I actually think these boxes are safer than the ones I see today in the US. The dogs have to physically hit the box with the trigger boxes. With these, The dog just has to hit the trigger and the ball flies over it. These are better for the dogs shoulders. With the boxes the dogs hit,recieve, and then turns, it applies alot of pressure on their shoulders. These actually look safer.

I agree. In American flyball, teams seem preoccupied with teaching the dog to retrieve the ball the moment it's released - which kinda runs contrary to the point of "flyball." As a result the dog basically comes to a screeching halt two inches from the box, or else slams into it. It doesn't look safer for the dog in any way, shape or form, and the ball doesn't "fly" anywhere.

I half agree with you. Yes, the commone boxes can be dangerous (If the ones you are talking about are the same as the ones in Australia) if the dog isn't trained right. A man in our team has just retired one of his dogs because he refuses to turn properly, and hits it frount on, without actuarly using it to turn on. But on the other hand, half the dogs that i have seen running would hit that box so hard and fast that they would injure themselves by running into it...

Safer? Hardly. It's quite easy to see in this video how the dogs often fall on the box padding, it looks terrible in some cases. How can this be allowed in the UK? It's very primitive. In American flyball, the dog is trained to do a swimmers turn. When done properly, the dog is jumping on and then pushing off of with all fours. It is not injurious to the dog in any way. It's also more enjoyable to watch than seeing dogs punched in the rib cage by a so-called flyball box.

The reason most dogs are Border Collies is because Flyball is a common sport for their breed...it is what their breed is known for...its not necessarily because of speed, its the bahavior type of the breed of dog

this is actually quite boring to watch...you should look up some videos of the renewed flyball competition...the boxes are far more modern...and the average speed of the highest divisions is so much faster. Rocket Relay, an american flyballteam...or the jolly jumpers...the fastest team in Europe... crazy!!
oh yes..and about the border collies: true...but the fastest team in the world...has NO border collies in it.... they just use them because of their flexibility on the box ..

The main thing is the safety of the dogs. Using this box is not safe no matter how much you "fink" the dogs enjoy it.

Yes, but Borders are tougher than Salukis, and, in short, Border Collies just do it faster, these are the top British teams, they are top because their dogs are the best at what they do, it just so happens that in Flyball and Agility, the best dogs are nearly always Border Collies or, in Belgium, Belgian Shepherds and Aussies

I agree. The reason my dog and I stopped Flyball was because our local association didn't want to switch boxes.
