يجب التفريق بين الصوفية الحقة وبين زنادقة الصوفية. الصوفية الحقة هم الذين يتمسكون بالكتاب والسنة والاجماع. ومن شذ شذ في النار.
كما أن هناك من يدعي أنه من السلف وينسب لله الجسم والحد والأعضاء والمكان! والله منزه عن ذلك كله. الله موجود بلا مكان هي عقيدة السلف والخلف. قال الطحاوي السلفي رحمه الله عن الله: "تَعَالىَ -أي الله- عَنِ الـحُدُودِ وَالغَايَاتِ، وَالأَرْكَانِ وَالأَعْضَاءِ وَالأَدَوَاتِ، لاَ تَحْوِيهِ الـجِهَاتِ الستُّ كَسَائِرِ الـمُبْتَدَعَاتِ".

"One of the greatest living authorities on Rûmî in Persia today, Hâdî Hâ'irî, has shown in an unpublished work that some 6,000 verses of the Dîwân and the Mathnawî are practically direct translations of Qur'ânic verses into Persian poetry."

Rumi was a trained Muslim theologian (Sunni way) and he used to teach fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) at mosque. Although his message is universal, he was definitely a devout Muslim...
I think his breadth of vision comes from his all-embracing understanding of the Qur'an. There's much ground for a universal theology in the Qur'an, since it affirms the Divine origin not only of Islam, but also of other faiths
