I love this song and do consider it among his best. It has everything that I admire in a song, particularly a Bowie song. It's well writen, thematicaly intriguing, Bowie sings well and musicaly has that weird otherworldly yet errily beutiful quality. It's almost celestial.

As for this songs theme, it's a coment on deism and spiritualism and about having ardent passions for things that are mysterious, unearthly and unknown like God and the supernatural and so forth. Bowies never been the overtly religious type but he's stated, in recent interviews, that he does beleive in God and has become more spiritualy concernd in his older age.

4:32-4:35 blatant depiction of what an OBE feels like, in bed but speeding through space to another dimension. Also beggining the video is a man in religious extasy as he's praying, thus trancending the body and uniting with the cosmos. ALL religions, without question are derived from the founders of each experiencing trancendent consciousness. It is what they taught but what has been sourly diluted over time. Buddhism, Zen and Yoga retain the true essence, that god is realised within.

Each one I've read has a different interpretation here's mine: thi is a political comment on the midddle ages' Saracens who professed the religion of Islam and the war unleashed between that sect and the Christians that has come to hunt us to this day. The chorus goes: believing the strangest things (that there's a God such as a Christian or a Muslim one). Loving the Alien; The Alien is his reference to God in this song.
