What do you suggest we do then, surely awareness raising is a good start. Educating people that rare gems from africa to get them out of the ground usually invlove human rights abuses. If people are aware of this then surely that is a good thing.

several problems with this first these people are just doing this for a story i know because i am a gem dealer and will NOT deal with gem rough mined like this the goverment of tanzania is very active in the goings of the mine and they have many many regulations also children arent usualy forced was watching natonal geographic and had kids beging to go to the mines to work the few who do work there are safe

not a real vid tanzania has strickt safty regulations and does not allow these things ive studied it because i buy gems and know that there are no children in the mines also wrong spot in tanzania faked it all finnaly the tanzanite is deep in the ground and not on the surface so how would you pan for it i dont think that a dry riverbed goes 10000ft deep but hey who can really honestly understand these peoples language and that where this vid was also faked

So they just sift anywhere they can in river beds looking for alluvial gems which are very rare in tanzanite, or dig anywhere they can creating these unregulated freelance mines which are mostly a futile effort AS THE VIDEO ALSO SAYS. Qho are you blaming here, TANZANITE ITSELF?? The people who buy tanzanite? Why not blame the PARENTS of these children who allow them to do this?? Ever think of that??

FIRST OF ALL THE VIDEO ITSELF SAYS THAT THESE ARE FREELANCE MINES!!!!!! The government of Tanzania runs the major mines where 99% of the tanzanite sold in the jewelry market comes from. There ARE very strict regulations because the Govt. knows the west won't buy gems mined by child slaves for christ's sake! These FREELANCE mines are mined by people who want to strike it rich and left their normal life and jobs, so many have come that there are not enough jobs to sustain them all.

Clearly the Government doesnt care about its people, its not the gem lovers out there that should be blamed. The Tanzania government should ban kids from working, control the mine 100%, hire local ADULT works, give them a proper mine with correct venilation, tools, protection, and sell the rocks and put the money back into the economy. But for now thats a dream, maybe one day.

The problem with Africa is the same as other countries around the world, they are the victims of Capitalist societies, the big fish always eat the small.......
If the world money is fairly distributed, then, everybody will be equal, but some, doestn want to lose the stauts, one day, the world will be one, one planet under God, so im not worry, people are changing their way of thinking, thats my hope. God bless all the countries around the world.
