this has got to be my favorite piece ever alongside Marche au Supplice, we played that one in band! i was hooked to this song forever...the middle of the songe reminds me of Beauty and The Beast, with the alternating chimes and brass

this middle section is what I've fallen in love with in this song. It's a bit of a non sequitur sort of because it just starts at 3:42, but its power is amazing.

You've heard it in the opening of The Shining probably. Wendy Carlos remixed it eletronically for the film. It's one of the most powerful classic pieces out there, it's also sampled in Zombies on Super Nintendo. I absolutely love it, the whole 10 minutes. The version conducted by Salonen is close to the quality of Karajan's I must say.
