So here are the most famous tuba excerpts from Hector Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique (Fantastic Symphony). Here they are played on my Yamaha 621 F tuba, which isn't really the best F tuba for symphonic work. I tend to overblow when playing these excerpts, because my ear and my body wants more sound than the horn can handle. Recording this little video one can see that I am overblowing the horn a bit, especially during the excerpts towards the end of the last movement of the piece.
It sure makes me miss my Rudy Meinl six valve 4/4 F tuba, which I sold about two years ago. The Yamaha is a great all-around F tuba, because it has a great low register and can basically play anything, but when a piece like this comes up where one really wants to fire-away, it definately holds back the player.

Ok, I have seen these videos a few times.I can't stand it anymore! Are these videos a joke or are they serious? Your sound is so poor! Who do you study with? Did you go to school? You should remove all of these so as not to embarrass the world with your sad playing.

well the tone is sometimes affected from the mic and where he is playing. Even though he is still playing tuba doesnt mean he majors in it.
Sort of a harsh comment though.

Basically intonation is a problem in these excerpts. It's probably the mic, but it doesn't sound good.

maybe not best tuba in the world, but it definitely has a nice round sound, my friend. Oh, I love the phrasing on some sections! I've heard once that "brass players don't have phrasing" from conductors. Stick with your beautiful phrasing, and I think you will go quite far my friend!

I agree. The pitch is verrry very wobbly, especially at the beginning and in the Dies Irae section, where the pitch needs to be particularly steady. The whole thing just needs to be louder as well - although like you explain, there are problems with the tuba. Maybe try it on an E flat?

I'm not much better tha him, but yes I do play tuba, and he's not overly wonderful on these parts, e.g. his tone is wobbly, his intonation isn't all that wonderful either,I'd suggest better, or more pronounced tounging, but, then again tuba isn't the easiest instrument in the world to sound good on. He dose fine in comparison to most tuba players though. Much better than many I've played with before.
They do make a point though. He's certainly no Baadsvik.

not the most centered sound(especially seeing as he's playing on an F so the range is not an issue), I still do challenge all of those who are comparing him to Baadsvik (the greatest player in the known world)to make a video to show us all how it's truly done....peace

i don't think you can overblow excerpts too much mate. in fact, you should try and play excerpts louder and luder every week inorder to push how far your extreme dynamics can go. i'm talking about fffff and ppppp. go right to the edge of both everyday and you'll find that your dynamic range will increase greatly.
