And like I said, factories are just starting to convert to more input efficient methods. Facilitate the purchase with tax credits and your companies become more profitable, compensating for most of the tax credit.
We need oil. We'll need it indefinitely. That's why I don't want to use all the easily accessible light sweet crude now, especially for one-time uses
(..but once, I had trouble shaking a Prius!!)
As with aircraft, it's all a balancing act for the designers. You don't get something for nothing, but with poor design, you get less.
1. We don't need to wait for new technology. The fixes exist already. And subsidized fossil fuels have artificially lowered their cost and externalized a number of costs. The Iraq Wars, for example, are not included in the cost of a barrel of oil.
2. Most American consumers and businesses are unaware that these more energy efficient options exist. Capitalism is most efficient where knowledge is diffuse.
3. Promote the existing technology which is known to work.
5. Direct subsidies toward renewable sources of energy and away from fossil fuels
Oh, to clarify 1, "their" is referring to the fossil fuels. We've artificially lowered their prices for decades. Japan and the EU have artificially raised them.
But let's say you need a geopolitical argument. While we buy oil from the other countries, they have a vested interest in maintaining stable relations with us.
As it is China controls the lion share of our national debt. We dilute their power by buying allegiance, by the barrel, from Middle Eastern states.
And from Wikipedia, "In 2007, 50.13% of Americans lived in the 40 most populous Metropolitan Statistical Areas."
We also enjoyed a rich train system until our oil and auto industries legislated in oil and auto subsidies and legislated rail subsidies away.
The Green Liberals all want to dictate How and What we all should Eat,Ride,Live, and teach Our Children...Hey, I think you should live in China! They can just "kill off" the people if they want. Sounds like your kind of Plan! The"Silent Majority" have had enough of the "crazys" and will start making the Changes for this Country, just like always. The Grown Ups will Slap Down the Stupid green kids and take the Cool Aid away.
WE ARE AMERICA!We are on the right path
July 4, 2008 = American Energy Independence Day
Brilliant and terrific idea, Mr. Gingrich. If a comprehensively American solution to energy presents itself now, from oil exploration in the Gulf of Mexico to new nuclear power plants, then let it develop as America wishes.
As for "independence" What keeps the oil here? Why would they sell domestically if the price was higher elsewhere?
Seems to me that the oil co's need competition from other sources of energy before the price comes down
