Youth Violence in East Oakland run amok. What will a bunch of Oakland youth do?
In 2004 Melrose Leadership Academy (Middle School) Students along with their Martial Arts, Theater Arts, and Video Production Instructor, Jay Pugao created a Video short/film that dealt with the on going youth violence in Oakland. Through the various elements of workshops facilitated by Pugao the youth acquired various skills from writing stories, violence prevention, acting, critical media analytical skills, storytelling, storyboarding, and video production basics. All the while integrating theater arts and trust building activities in order to have healthy discussions around intimate and sensitive topics. All youth in the class helped create the story as well as playing the roles of assistant directors, lighting grip, boom mic operators, camera persons, producers, actors/actress and are all between the ages of 10-14 years old. The workshops and project was done in only 5 days.
