They're all useless. It's a videogame. As for moving the plot forward, well....RE doesn't really have a good plot. As much as I love it, it's a shitty storyline with shitty voice casting and it's only real charm is the outrageous amounts of violenceand gore and the "Oh shit!" moments when a big fucking monster attacks from nowhere in a tiny hallway. Other than that it's pontless puzzles(why would you cross town to get three gems when you can shoot the damn case to open it) and explosions.
