This is a historical movie by Kola Oyewo. It is about the attempts of specific yoruba towns to rid themselves of the excesses of their Ibadan overlords. Brief history: Most yoruba country prior to mid 19th century was controlled by the Alafin who was the head of Oyo Empire. According to Samuel Johnson in "The History of Yorubas" at the peak of its power, Oyo empire stretched from west of River Niger to "as far as Ashanti and included the Gas of Accra.." In the 19th Century however, Old Oyo was sacked by the Fulanis and citizens of Oyo spread across Yoruba country and finally settled on Egba farm later called Ibadan. It is from here that the Yoruba put up a fierce battle against the Fulanis and stopped their progression into the rest of Yoruba country.
If Ibadan became the center of Yoruba power against external aggression, it also developed an aggressive control of other yoruba towns. Kola Oyewo in this movie shows how these towns challenged the Ibadans and fought for their independence. Enjoy.

Yes,there some movies out there about the events during the life span of the Empire. There was Alafin Aole, a film about the reign of that king;there was Afonja,about this Are Onakakanfo(war general of the Empire)who challenged the supremacy of Alaafin while posted in Ilorin &colluded with the Fulanis to gain independence from Oyo, in the end,the same Fulani killed him and took Ilorin from him.Today,a Fulani,Emir Gambari,is the paramount ruler of the Yoruba town;Bashorun Gah,a despot.Get them.

Upon these atrocities committed by these few AJELES,I think the Yoruba people must be grateful to Ibadan because it was Ibadan that defeated these Fulani marauders,that safeguards Yoruba`s cultures,traditions and freedom today.

adunbarin4;Thanks for posting this film but I think you `re not fair in your comment on this film.Although we Ibadan don`t deny the abuse and heavy handed manner that those AJELE operated in those towns they were sent to;see,`Iwe Itan Ibadan`by former Olubadan of Ibadan Oba Akinyele.
Latoosa ,of course failed to check the activities of those Ajele who were sent to safeguard Yoruba territory against Fulani & Edo invasion

Akknile, please tell me where I was unfair. I noted that Ibadan was the center of resistance against external aggression and that it also developed aggressive control of other Yoruba towns, observations you seemed to have shared in your posts. You also rightly noted that Latoosa failed to control these Ajeles though he knew what they were doing.
Akknile, there are aspects of our history, human sacrifice, slavery, incessant civil wars, etc that should be confronted and accepted, we r not saints.

Ibadan did not`developed an aggressive control of other yoruba towns`some Ekiti towns like Usi-Ekiti,Igogo-Ekiti etc called on Ibadan for protection against Edo people.

How about other Ekiti towns? And what did the Ibadans get in return of protecting these small Ekiti towns? Did the Ibadans not take the lion share of these people farm products? The Ibadans waged several needless and very costly wars against the Ijebus and the Egbas, so as to take control of lucrative trade routes and for access to gunpowder supplies. The truth, akknile, whether u want to accept it or not, is that after Oyo was sacked, Ibadan filled the power vacum and used it abusively.

Well, the Ibadans also benefited from sacking the Fulanis, in that they, too, would have been enslaved by the Fulanis. Besides, other yoruba joined in the fight against the Fulanis. What the Ibadan should have done, if they want to get full credits, is to pursue the Fulanis out of Ilorin. If that had been done, a Fulani would not be an Emir of a Yoruba city today and the OluIbadan would have been gotten more support in his challenge of the Alaafin's chairmanship of the council of Oyo State obas.
