I am moved once again to comment on the greatness of this man, his voice, his spirit. I wish that this song could be heard by all the people of the world who are capable of hearing it. I only wish that I could understand Turkish to hear it, although I believe that this song, as much as any song I have ever heard, speaks to the universal language of the human heart.

I was introduced to Tolga Candar by Turkish friends on a trip to Istanbul a few years ago. They were playing his most recent CD (and as far as I know the last one he released). I was immediately riveted when I heard the first measures of "Haydar." (My friends by the way were also Alevi.) I was living in Hungary at the time but now live in Arizona, in the U.S. But I hope to return to Turkey, perhaps next summer, and this time to visit Anatolia and also to see Tolga Candar in concert.
