I think these two women here can hold their own pretty well in this song. It may be a man's song like you said but they are earnest here. And that is all that matters.

The vocals in SM&B66 recordings were always beautifully recorded and mixed with the backgroung music. Vocals are always clear and lush. The more primitive recording technology in 1960s sounds better than today's more modern technology.

This is a classic version of a timeless song from the master. Jimmy was kind enough to respond to our invite to speak to songwriters here in NYC. His music is timeless, and he's one of the best American songwriters of all time - up there with Gershwin, Porter, and Brian Wilson.

Agreed that Jimmy Webb is a master songwriter who has composed many timeless songs (like "Witchita Lineman"), but he should leave the singing of these songs to others. When he sings his songs he tortures them. He is a songwriter, not a singer. Same advice to Burt Bacharach.

Granted, even Jimmy I think acknowledges his limited singing, and he never made a big career as a solo artist. But the renditions he did on "Ten Easy Pieces," shows the real feelings behind his songs. Other artists were able to convey those feelings - I think of Richard Harris and Art Garfunkel made wonderful recordings of Jimmy's songs. And seeing Jimmy perform a couple of months ago, he looked like he was enjoying himself, and remeniscing a little. But agreed, he's not the best singer

Jimmy Webb has been fortuniate in that many of his simple songs were given beautiful arrangements by other song writers, for example this arrangement of "Wichita Lineman" by Sergio Mendes and Herb Alpert. Similarily with the song "MacArthur Park". The arrangements have taken Webb's songs to a higher level....in many ways it is the arrangements by other writers that have made his songs stand out. Lucky for Jimmy Webb.

Except, he wrote the orchestra for "Macarthur Park," then was able to get Richard Harris to sing it. So, arrangements do add, but listen to his basic piano versions; the songs are simple, yet refined, and hold up due to their unique, captivating melody and chord changes. But Jimmy knew enough to have others record these songs. Reminds me of Dylan, in a way; his songs are often just played on guitar, but hold up so well due to their uncanny structure

I can appreciate the viewpoint that "it's a man's song"...but I can't help be appreciate the love these two ladies put into the song at the same time.
Haven't heard DB, BTW, so my comments should be heard only outside his context.
I particularly love: 1) this version; 2) Glen Campbell's well known version, and 3) Johnny A's long and languid version of more recent vintage.
