Do you mean Dirt in the Ground? A great song definitely, right now my favourite Cold Cold Ground from Frank's Wild Years-particularly the Bridge School Benefit version with the Kronos Quartet (on youtube, and in my favourites if you're lazy)

I liked the video, the minimalism enhances the effect of the brilliant song quite well, the way it ambiguously turned mundane things like stretching and lighting a cigarette into praying and suicide was done superbly.

Maybe also the hands represent the two sides of himself. He has an evil side-- as we all do-- and this lead him to kill and he did not resist the temptation (maybe a moment of temporary insanity) so though he's responisble, he's in some ways not.

I agree and disagree .... I know the original only too well, but when Johnny sings it ...it's like it was written for him to sing. Nick Cave is great - but this song has so much more passion from the 'man in black'. I remember Nick cave in his early days ( I'm in australia ) ...I rate the Cash version very highly. Both good!

They're both great. Both different. Both similar. I'll always love the Nick Cave version more, because it's the one I'm most accustomed to, and he wrote it, but man, Johnny Cash does prison songs better than anybody. I added both version to favorites right after the other.

Nick caves version is by far superior but, it shows the significance of the song if a legend like johnny cash is willing to cover it. I just finished seeing nick cave in seattle and when he played this song i felt like i was going to cry, its a powerful one!

Um... Nick Cave kinda wrote the song, so I don't see how his version can get rid of the power of it. They are very different tho, which is good. The Johnny Cash one is absolutely amazing! I had no idea he covered it until I heard it at a coffee shop the other day! Great job!

I don't disagree with you, because I don't know much about either musicians, but in all the live shows I've heard Nick Cave always says, "This is a song that Johnny Cash wrote."

Nick Cave wrote the song The Mercy Seat for his 1988 Tender Prey album; his 'signature tune', it has been performed at nearly every concert since 1988. The song tells the story of a condemned man facing death on the electric chair seeking redemption in the afterlife. This song was later covered by Johnny Cash on his album, American III: Solitary Man. The american electro-industrial band Stromkern had also covered this song in 1997 on their album Flicker Like a Candle.

I've *never* heard him say that, but if he did he was not being literal. This is Cave's song, Cash covered it and credited Cave.
The original version is much more passionate than this, but I love both.

The two versions have a different perspective. The original version of Nick Cave focuses on the chaos and distress in the mind of the condemned man, while the cover by Johnnny Cash shows the dispair and pain that the condemned is feeling. Both versions are fantastic. If you like the Johnny Cash version better, you should check the live videos of Nick Cave performing Mercy Seat. The live versions are also more sober than the album and video version.
