The kid just never realized that he was eating was a powerless pig because his father kept it from him. And "a shot through the head. they're better off dead" is talking about the animals we kill just so we can eat, when we could easily eat something else (the better off dead part is talking about what they say). I think he song's meaning is to stop believing everything your told, and make your own opinion.
