As the audacity of his alleged trading scam became clearer, Société Générale filed an official complaint accusing Mr Kerviel of falsifying records and computer fraud.
They suspect he was taking massive risks in an attempt to boost his bonuses which, his salary included, amounted to a relatively modest £75,000 last year.
Investigating judges and police are expected to try to interview the 31-year-old at the earliest available opportunity, after the Paris prosecutors office opened a preliminary hearing into the scandal.
The bank has revealed that the team Mr Kerviel worked for was only producing revenues of £15 million a year, underlining just how daring his alleged deception was.
One former colleague described the situation as a 'like a mutating virus', adding: 'Once you are in the maelstrom it is probably hard to stop.'
This morning Mr Kerviel was absent from the two bedroom flat he rents for some £2000-a-month in the upmarket Paris suburb of Neuilly-sur-Seine.
The incredible sum lost by Société Générale, France's second biggest bank, dwarves the £827 million lost by British dealer Nick Leeson, who was sentenced to six-and-a-half years in prison after sinking Barings Bank in 1995.
Mr Kerviel was apparently suffering from 'intense personal problems', including breaking up with his girlfriend.
Originally from Lyon, in south west France, Mr Kerviel is also said to have suffered 'a family tragedy' two years ago.
