Yes. Definately a big pity how many people died in this movie. But whatever, not like we can rewrite history, and the director was likely extremely sorry for all those deaths...

oh my goodness! this was terrific. William Wyler was the assistant director on this movie and 40 years later he directed the 1960 version. Compare the 2 and one will see that many of the camera positions and editing in the "modern" version were identical to the silent version. Wyler, that rascal, was just duplicating himself. this move was an awesome technical achievement. thanks for posting it.

Horses were actually killed in this version. In 1989 a 30th anniversary video of the '59 film was released. At the end was a lengthy documentary covering the entire history of this story; from the unusual circumstances that inspired Wallace to write the book up to the filming of Heston's version. If any of you come across this video, don't pass it up. You wouldn't believe what Wyler & company went through to make that movie. Anyway, in this one, the crash at 8:24 was real.

You know I kinda like this version of Ben Hur better than the 1959 version... Sure the newer version was a lot more spectacular... but this version is a lot more fun to watch.
I have read where in the sea battle of the silent version... that there is a shot of a ship in the background on fire... and a bunch of guys jumping off... and I guess the panic is real... since the ship actually did start on fire... and the extras were jumping off for real:)
