We must face the realities of what the occupation of Iraq has done to US military personnel, prisoners and all Iraqis. Torture and abuse was authorized by the highest levels of our government, in clear violation of the Geneva Conventions and human rights.
Our elected officials used our ill equipped soldiers by playing on their fear and anguish. These soldiers did what they were told, desperate to please instructors who promised that their actions would help bring the war to an end - negligent, evil minded instructors who were actually independent contractors more concerned about lining their pockets with profits.
Thousands of innocent Iraqis were detained without hope of release. They were subjected to torture at the hands of their captors and the guards assigned to protect them.
Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld and other senior officials remain blameless. Those who knew, directed it, endorsed it and supported it stepped casually into the role of torturers and abusers, replacing the former Iraqi dictator himself, Saddam Hussein.

It is too easy. An artist must splash his emotions around for all to see. Unfortunately Botero did not expose himself to the horrors of the Saddam regime and paint that too. Now it turns out that we subcontracted the job of running Abu Ghraib to a private contractor. I cannot imagine anything worse than this. It shows a complete sociopathic inability to take any responsibility. Let's create regime change in Washington DC.

Botero is not dismissing Saddam´s reign of terror with this. He is simply stating that some of those who represent the US are reponsible for acts that are just as horrible if not worse, than Saddam´s. Please, I suggest you stop acting like a complacent lemming who has been fed by the big corporate US media, and educate yourself about what events are going on in the world before you comment on the work of great artists, like Botero. How about you do some research on Blackwater or Halliburton.

Perhaps Botero held high expectations for Americans in particular because of our supposed high moral standards and human ethics? For whatever his reason, this particular event in time stirred deep emotions within him. As an artist, he is sharing his emotions. I think he did a wonderful job as I share in his disgust.

As an American citizen I can say the Bush years (including the father) have not been our best years. It's been one embarrassment after another. Thanks to Botero for making us remember these dark years forever. Remember these paintings are not just about America. They're about fascism, intolerance, stupidity, ethnocentrism, cruelty and a sense of insecurity--these qualities have no nationality--and could happen in your home town tomorrow.

I completely resent Karpinski's comments- I don't accept that the soldiers responsible were just pawns in this event whose major crime was being "ill equipped" or suffering the effects of " fear" or "anguish". It is beyond outrageous for her to make excuses for these savages. I don't see "fear" and anguish as reasonable excuses in this case especially not by soldiers of the "greatest nation on earth".

I imagine the Iraqi people live in the most fear of all- as civilians in a war zone. I haven't seen evidence of them systematically torturing Americans. These pictures don't convey any "fear as far as the soldiers are concerned. More likely they're a bunch of entitled American bigots which would explain the joyous amusement of the pointing and the laughing at tormented Iraqis.

The torture was authorized by the highest levels of government but it was these animals that staged and inflicted the acts and they are not victims of anyone. Karpinski is as sick as her soldiers to makes such statements.
