hear the callas version with the vocal score and a piano... and you'll notice that the notes are exactly at the higher they were written. And not only that you can hear that notes with a strong voice... not the whispering of sutherland

Well, not to be big-headed but you should know what you're talking about before even asserting it. Sutherland's voice itself is huge so there is no way she is "whispering" at all. I don't quite understand what you were getting it with Callas's high notes but the reason you hear her more clearly being that she was accompanied by a piano, not an orchestra and a choir.

there are MANY sopranos that sing this better than her, simply by the virtue of the fact that there are many sopranos that can sing all of the high notes in tune, Joan Sutherland cant, there are numerous recordings of her singing this (transposed down to Eb to help her), and the same notes are always out of tune. She was far too dramatic to be singing light lyric roles like this well, which she proved, by never singing them well.

Everyone has an off night. Better an off night, than an entire, if short, career singing out of pitch, courtesy of Maria Callas. By the way, to Skitzo429, philisig, and other snatches pissing here, go back to customizing ring tones on your PDA. The Sutherland recording of the Bell Song is the the most perfect execution of any aria by any singer any time, with the possible exception of Galli-Curci's Caro Nome.

No this is really something for real coloraturas. Nothing for big voices, no Callas, no Sutherland. Who can sing all is not the best specialist. What a difference to a vivid, fast Pons or an etheric Hallstein.
On the other side. That age and still a vocal power. Respect.

skitzo has got it right! suherlands versions of this on record and audio all show the same flaws. and i don't really understand it, except that this aria is consistently high and consistently calling for staccati which seem to be overdone for the heavier sutherland voice here. i think the trap she and bonynge fall into here is trying to make her voice sound lighter, as callas wrongly did with her higher soprano bel canto roles--except norma of course. peters bests her here hands down!
