"At the time, Cage was teaching Experimental Composition at New York City's New School. Eight years beyond 4:33, he was (as our smoking MC informs us) the most controversial figure in the musical world at that time. His first performance on national television was originally scored to include five radios, but a union dispute on the CBS set prevented any of the radios from being plugged in to the wall. Cage gleefully smacks and tosses the radios instead of turning them on and off.
While treating Cage as something of a freak, the show also treats him fairly reverentially, cancelling the regular game show format to allow Cage the chance to perform his entire piece. "

Well, it's not supposed to be funny, it's unintentionally funny. That's what's great about it. You see, he comes on stage pretending to be a serious composer, somehow following vaguely in the tradition of classical music, of Beethoven, Brahms, and Bruckner, but he's not making music, he's just being ridiculous. There is so much excess here, so much of the ridiculous, and so little music, while the whole thing is framed in the context of seriousness, it's no surprise we find it amusing.

Except music is the organization of noise. That is precisely what that was, organized noise. Everything he did was deliberate. This IS music he was a serious composer.

And what's our standard of the quality of music? How well it's organized? If that is our standard, or if we have no good standard at all, then it doesn't take much to be a serious composer. But if music is about the ability to express beauty, or sublimity, or to move men, and to be not just noise but noise with *meaning*, then this is certainly no serious composition. I cannot fathom the mind that will find this more enjoyable or moving to listen to than any symphony of the old masters.

Music is an organization of sounds. expression of beauty, sublimity, etc. is extra. It is not what defines music but what defines what music is good (to you). Any sound can be music to someone. This does not mean it is GOOD music to your personal ears, but you cannot say it is not music.

I like the way that the audiences squawking and chattering becomes part of the piece, laughter in particular becomes quite ethereal when taken out of context. I'm not sure about the previous comment about music being the organisation of noise or sounds, can't incidental sound be music depending on the "perspective" of the listener?
