It doesn't matter who and how it is sung - the song is so beautiful that it lasts under any circumstance. Janet Baker has a beautiful voice, Andreas Scholl - more up tempo and less vibrato is also very nice, but also Gerard Lesne.

Pace, to you musical cognoscenti out there, but are we not missing the point, by a critique of the various elements? Did you enjoy the piece, in toto? There seems to be a great deal of " Can't see the wood for the trees". I enjoyed the experience I had listening to this great artist! Many thanks for sharing with us.

I agree with CountessVonBruhl and I enjoyed listening to this beautiful piece.Dame Baker has a wonderful voice.I have this piece by another British singer,contralto Kathleen Ferrier,but I prefer Baker's rendition.Grazie mille Margotlorena for posting this.

Janet is a wonderful singer, my late brother Jim when he was employed in the Victoria and Albert Museum told me of listening to Janet Baker during her Sunday concerts. I agree this aria is beautiful and Janet Baker pleases my ear as does countless others I have singing this musical gem.

Mezza voce is a musical term. It literally means 'half voice' but it describes a moderate tone. It is given as a direction - eg 'Du bist die Ruh' needs a good sustained mezza voce. Quite tough!

I've heard countless versions of this aria, and I think Janet Baker's rendition is the best (Kathleen Ferrier is a close 2nd). Baker has the perfect voice for this song. She is a very underrated singer -- one of the best mezzos ever. I highly recommend one of her cd's -- "Arie Amore". If you can find it, buy it!
