Not to be hypercritical, but he's taking that way too slow.
-------and who taught the guy to conduct? He's holding the baton like it's a wet rag, flinging it this way and that. There's no consistency with his time-beating.

Georgous! I've played this piece w/ symphony many times, and the tempo is plenty fast enough -- and slow enough to speed up here and there. A very expressive interpretation that is a compliment to Berlioz's composition.

Part of the new school - strict beat at rehearsal until happy - expressive performance. If you want strict beat - Adrian Boult. Not too slow, tho' slower than most.

I totally agree with you...it just seems like he slows down and speeds up during phrases---when it's not appropriate however. I can't stand listening to any instrumental music played by "musicians" who don't know what phrases are. I will tell you, however, you've got to see Miriam Burns of the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra. She's a very dynamic, expressive conductor for that orchestra----and is also the cover conductor for the New York Philharmonic.

Im studying the second and fourth movement of Symphonie Fantastique for my final exams in Ireland it would be great except they expect you to remember the notes of the themes its fakin ridiculous so they can kiss my musical butt :P

you can't judge if a conductor is good or not only by judging the way he's holding his baton. Many great conductors never beat the tempo! take Munch for example who is one of the best interpretet of this symphony!

I'm studying this for my Leaving Cert in Ireland as well but. It's not too hard a movement to study. I like the wild conducting inthe video. That guy is must be getting a good workout.

At the level that these musicians are at, they do not need a consistent or clear beat. They know the piece well enough and have good enough ears that they don't need some guy up there going 1 2 3. Maybe a youth orchestra would need that type of clarity but in the big leagues it could be conceived as insulting if a conductor is up there just giving the beat. Now if this was Messaien it would be different but I'm sure these people have played Symphonie Fantastique a hundred times.
