And the artists themselves? Slight modification on Chinese? Come on now! I know Japan isn't exactly popular with most Asians who aren't Japanese, but using an instrument which isn't 100% homegrown hardly indicates that a country or an ethnicity is incapable of producing talent. Not that any ONE artist or performance is a good measurement of any culture or people.

^^ I'm fully aware of where Kanji come from, and that Japan got quite a few of it's innovations from China (religion, architecture, musical instruments ...) However, they are two separate countries, and they are quite different. Trying to write off Japan as a China copy is rather silly. Every country borrows from others and changes things. *grin* As an American, where my culture, nationality, and forefathers are 'borrowed' from another country I am acutely aware of this.

If we're talking in terms of what is a good representation of Japanese culture, I will agree with you that this is NOT it. Nothing modern ever really captures the heart and soul of a country. Especially older ones who have had some time to become what they are. In my experience anyways. However, I would maintain that the artists are indeed Japanese and bring some of that style with them.

btw if ou hadn't noticed they're playing shamisen and not what is the 'okinawan' shamisen whic was based on a chinese instrument. Shamisen was its' own development by the japanese. I love the yosida brother music so do many other people.

The things u love so much about this music is actually Chinese in origin.Without doing research you and many other people will never know that. The way they forced to hold the Shamisen;playing it sitting down;the distinctive tones of the Shamisen;all is Chinese.The fundamentals remain the same.The small Japanese changes,changes nothing:-)Compare the two instruments without knowing which is which,you will be amazed.Now find out where is comes from.Japanese changes have not altered the instrument

The sanxian has a rather long history. It was written in Yang Shen's Sheng'an waiji of the Ming Dynasty that "the origin of sanxian dated back to the Yuan Dynasty" (1279-1368). Its origin can be traced to an ancient instrument of the Qin Dynasty called xiantao.

Huh ... changes which don't result in alterations ... isn't that an oxymoron? The Shamisen's origins lie in the Sanxian. That doesn't make it the same. Sorry, but I trust the people who decided to class them as two different instruments (though definitely related), which appears to be the standard view of the world.

Every part of the instrument has a history.Some legends say the top section was the way the wife of the inventor used to keep her hair with three sticks.Japan doesnt even know that,but they luv it and call it their own without knowing why it was designed in such a way.They follow ancient Chinese traditions but without even knowing why.And then you get people who praise the Japanese for an excellent instrument and playing style.All I see is two Japanese guys enjoying a Chinese instrument

Well consider this as well: In regards to technology Japan took a lot of Western inventions and innovations, copied them, then figured out how to make them better, or better suited for their people anyways. Japan has been considered an innovator in technology for a long time. Their achievements in that area are solely theirs. That does not mean that we have no merits of our own. Else, by using English to type all of this, we'd both be Englishmen.

It's a modified Chinese instrument,but its still fundamentally Chinese because the core things which make it a Chinese instrument remained unmodified :-)

^^ I'm not a musician, nor an expert on Asian music, otherwise I'd draw more similar comparisons. Sticking to art: if I decide to become a mangaka and make my own manga they won't be Japanese any more than I am. I'm not suggesting for a moment that the Shamisen is superior to the Sanxian. Can u name 1thing the Chinese got from Japan in ancient times?Lets say,Japan learns how to make one pizza.They teach their method.Students travel around JAPAN 2 improve skills coz they think Japan invented it.They learn little,only 1 variation.U right,Italy is China in your example.Sanxian,the original pizza learnt.Italy has more variety & can absorb other variations coz they invented it.America can only copy and change.Italy is best.Credit must go to Italy\China,DIPSHIT!

well in that case the shamisen could very well have been Mongolian, as Kublai Khan and his family ruled China during that period of time and influenced the arts community heavily
