i have been told by friends of milanov from jugoslavia, that her real age was 5 years older than she her public age. that means she retired from the met at age 65 and the last broadcast of chenier is an amazing document of how when warmed up--she sounds like a young singer in her prime. an amazing woman and peformer---despite what you have all heard about zinka--and her ego was enormous--she was very sweet to fans and very gracious in company. she loved singing, food,her husband very much.

I never heard even from Swedes that Jussi lacked confidence. I know he had some problems but was surely aware of what a great singer he was. He from what I am told never was nervous before he sang such as say Corelli was. I heard him live one time only in Rigoletto in Chicago, 1958, two years later he died in Sweden at 49 years old. He he is 29 years old!

The great Ettore Panizza is the conductor.
I heard Zinka first in 1944.
Jussi in 1946 also in Cleveland.
A few years later, Jussi did a surprise concert in Miami, replacing an operetta co.
I told him I was a tenor & was studying for the operatic stage & he said Oh. A dear lady stranger who was standing there then spoke up and added: "Yes, and he has a beautiful voice" - then Jussi said "OH!"

My teacher here in London calls it (the 'Sweet Attack') 'raccogliere la voce', or 'bringing it in'...giving the note some space to swell, rather than 'hitting' it head-on...infintely healthier, and it makes it so much easier to sing. It makes everything else fall into place, and you can have more energy for the really big notes, like Madame does at 7:10 on 't'amo'...whilst raising the fucking roof! God knows I love this stuff!!

I was at her Met farewell. She was glorious as Richard Tucker himself was never more exciting. I can still hear the thunderous ovations.

Stinka, (opps! I meant Zinka), is to my ears way off pitch at 7:10. The "t'amo" is nearly a whole step off! I cannot take her. Bjorling is delightful and so youthful sounding.

Big glorious "commerce"???????? You are too kind, big glorious mediocre wanna be's but never will be's is probably closer to the mark. I am filled with despair when I listen to what today's audiences scream and shout "Bravo" for! Now I realise we lived through the PLATINUM age of singing which will NEVER EVER be repeated. Sadly today's audiences want forgettable lacklustre singing only!!!!!!

I HAVE IT COMPLETE, JB DID NOT SING THE LAST ACT ARIA AS USUAL BUT IN SOME HOUSES IT WAS ALWAYS A TRADITION NOT TO DO IT YET AT THE MET TUCKER, DOMINGO ETC. ALL SANG IT. DEL MONACO MAY ALSO HAVE SKIPPED IT IN CALIF. BJORLING NEVER BOTHERED TO SING IT FOR WHATEVER REASON. ZEANI HEARD HIM DO Ballo AT LA SCALA IN 51' BUT DOES NOT REMEMBER IF HE SANG IT-- I ASKER HER TWO YEARS AGO.

This duet comes from the complete 1940 Met broadcast, which is available if you seek it out. The vocal combination of Milanov and Bjoerling was dynamite. Bjoerling stands as a law unto himself even today. Ditto for Milanov. Her 1952 Met broadcast of "Forza", and her studio recordings with Bjoerling of "Trovatore" and "Aida" are cherished vocal documents. By the way, Milanov was born on May 17, 1906. She was five years Bjoerling's senior.

Zinka Milanov's place in the history of great operatic singers is quite secure, and I am not the least upset by your view of this great 1952 Serius broadcast of the 1952 "Forza del Destino". I'll not change my opinion one iota. "Forza" could have been written for Milanov. Perhaps you have a very bad pressing of the broadcast, or perhaps you just shouldn't listen to Zinka Milanov. Your loss, I'm happy to say.
