its not a tuba solo pizzapayyan101.....2 tubas and all 4 bassoons play that, no trombone solo in this movement
They may both have ... ( 3 days ago by havinghehs)
They may both have divine music, but Berlioz overshadows them in passion, symbolism, emotion, any term actually which doesn't mean gallant...Romanticism is FAR different from that of the Baroque Era and the gallant style. It's just a completely different feel buddy.
berlioz music ... ( 3 days ago by nakedBison69)
berlioz music sounds like nothing but a lot of loud, disconnected, awful noise. what a contrast to the Divine music of Bach and the energetic harmonious music of Mozart
That was what ... ( 3 days ago by havinghehs)
That was what Berlioz' critics always said. I mean, the character of this piece is in hell, so it makes sense that it would be loud and frightening.
Bach and Mozart are both amazing, but kind of repetitive. Luckily Beethoven was able to stop everything from constantly following the rules. I mean, once you hear the start of a Mozart piece, you know what to expect for the rest of it...with a few exceptions.
beethoven destroyed ... ( 3 days ago by nakedBison69)
beethoven destroyed classical music. some of his music is great, but that was only because despite his rebellion, he was still trained in the works of the greats before him. the critics of berlioz were right. i for one do not buy musical CD's of composers born after mozart (1756) with only very, very few exceptions, such as beethoven, weber, schubert, and mendelssohn. mozart was the greatest of them all, with baroque being the best period for music
Well, yeah. ... ( 3 days ago by havinghehs)
Well, yeah. History proved he destroyed it, hence the Romantic Era. You should see the movie "Eroica" which is about Beethoven's third symphony. It's really interesting to see people's response to his "destroying" classical music. You're obviously musically conservative which is fine. Berlioz wasn't trained...you're right, but I don't think that's any reason to think he's horrible. I know he's kind of the emo guy of the romantics, but I still love him despite his ties to the emo...
I like a balance ... ( 3 days ago by nakedBison69)
I like a balance between intellect and emotion, with the intellect in control. Bach can be overly intellectual at times, yet there is something very pleasant about listening to music that is so well-organized, so much in control of itself, and all for the sake of essentially singing to G-d. Mozart, too, while more emotionally expressive than Bach, always harnasses his emotions with his supreme intellect, although Mozart's music is mostly secular.

I kind of see the Bach-Mozart musical supremacy the way I see the George Washington-Abraham Lincoln supremacy of American Presidents. When I listen to either one, it has the feeling of a great geometric figure being transformed into sound and joined with Heaven. Berlioz, in sharp contrast, reminds me the sound that my local garbage collector makes when driving by to collect garbage.

if you think classical music and baroque music even moreso is different from Berlioz, I challenge you to listen to the beautifully heavenly Renaissance music of Palestrina, which you can find here on youTube

Actually, I get a good fill of Renaissance music on a weekly basis. I do love Renaissance music. Especially La Guerre and other Chansons.
My problem with Bach is that it's so mathematical, however fascinating. I just find the thunderousness of Berlioz, Beethoven and Brahms to be beyond belief. It grabs hold of me and forces me into their world.
You mentioned you like Schubert, but you didn't mention Schumann. What about some 20th century composers such as Durufle, and Glass?
And besides, ... ( 3 days ago by havinghehs)
And besides, Berlioz wasn't trying to make a beautifully heavenly sound. His character gets excecuted and ends up in hell. So it would make sense that this would be so different. The music is so visual that you can hear the witches laughing at him on their brooms, and see the fire of hell as it surrounds him the further he gets, and you can hear the Demons singing "Dies Irae" which surprises me that you wouldn't like that part actually.
Actually, I do not ... ( 3 days ago by nakedBison69)
Actually, I do not like Schubert's music either, but I may be willing to give it a try. As for mathematical vs thunderous music, I prefer the mathematical kind. It goes with the way my brain works. I understand that Mozart himself was a brilliant mathematician. As for 20th century composers, I have been VERY impressed with the music of Ralph Vaughn Williams. His rendition of Greensleeves is about as beautiful as music can possibly get.

I guess I prefer to be inspired and uplifted by music, rather than taken to the depths of hell. In movies, too, the Sound of Music is one of my favorite movies, while I abhor violent movies and scary movies
Have you tried ... ( 3 days ago by havinghehs)
Have you tried Schubert's song cycles, they are crazy but only throught the text (Besides his version of Erlkoning which is CRAZY). And yes, Vaughan Williams is fantastic, especially his "Songs of Travel". You should give Durufle a try if you haven't, his music follows the gregorian chant style! Thats fair to say that you like to be uplifted, I just enjoy being overtaken by the romantic style. It helps me forget the world during the time and only think of what is happening in the piece.

Ironically, Casablanca and American Beauty are my favorite movies, which have nothing to do with each other haha
well, i will say ... ( 3 days ago by nakedBison69)
well, i will say that i have heard various people singing Schubert's Ava Maria, and was simply astounded by its beauty. I especially liked the way it was sung by a little known singer named Lara Fabian. I actually like a lot of modern music, even rock music on rare occasions. I like some of the Beatles, but my favorite group is probably Simon & Garfunkel. I love Karen Carpenter's singing, as well as Mary Hopkin, Celine Dion, Ofra Haza, and some others
the only Humphrey ... ( 3 days ago by nakedBison69)
the only Humphrey Bogart movie I ever saw was the Treasures of Sierra Madre. I was too young to appreciate whatever value it has. I saw American Beauty, and was amazed that any Hollywood movie could get so deep. Among my favorite movies of all time are Ten Commandments, Fiddler on the Roof, Sound of Music, Elephant Man, Amadeus, and Gandhi
is Lara Fabian not ... ( 3 days ago by havinghehs)
is Lara Fabian not well-known? I always assume that if I know of someone, then everyone else does too lol. Anyhow, many romantic composers such as Schubert, Schumann and others all have gorgeous vocal music, but you have to seek it out. Elephant Man...never seen it
actually, i tend to ... ( 3 days ago by nakedBison69)
actually, i tend to NOT like vocal classical music, even and especially bach. his cantatas all sound the same, and sound very pretentious and even angry. nor do i like opera, not even when written by mozart. about the only classical vocal music that i like on a consistent basis is from the Renaissance, especially music written for the church, which I guess is an odd position for me to take given that I am Jewish. overall, modern vocal music is to me vastly superior over classical vocal music
Not even Mozart's ... ( 3 days ago by havinghehs)
Not even Mozart's Magic Flute or Strauss' Die Fledermaus? I'm sorry I love classical vocal music, but I'm getting a grad degree in accompanying and choral conducting, so I'm a bit biased. There is some great vocal music in the solo rep as well, especially in Schumann and Schubert. Not so much in Mozart or Beethoven. I don't know if there is any with Berlioz or not...
well, of course ... ( 3 days ago by nakedBison69)
well, of course there are exceptions to my general dislike of classical vocal music. i already mentioned how i like the sacred vocal music of the Renaissance. I also enjoy Handel's Messiah and Mozart's Requiem Mass. what i tend to not like is any singing that sounds pretentious and unnatural, opera being the primary example of what i mean. i prefer a folksy, simple, unassuming type of singing
If you don't like ... ( 2 days ago by havinghehs)
If you don't like Handel's Messiah or Mozart's requiem...then you have no soul LOL.
Usually it's the singers themselves that give opera and song cycles a pretentious feel. You have to find the right one. Folk music is just awesome haha
