I just love this song. it's my favourite Monkees song of all time. in fact, I'll get it stuck in my head for days on end. I've been a Monkees fan for most of my 45 years, and while they were never musical geniuses, they sure put out some cute tunes. thanks for posting this one. sometimes I just need to hear it.

The song is about Micky's trip to England, and he heard the phrase used in a television program, and thought it was funny. He didn't know what it meant, but Davy did, so it's also called "Alternative Title."
Some people also think it's about the Beatles.

They did sing the songs. Only Mike Nesmith, Peter Tork were natural musicians and songwriters. Davey Jones and Mickey Dolenz were what we call are "prettyfaces".
Nesmith wrote the song "A Different Song" sung by Linda Rondstandt.
Nesmith wrote some of the songs, so far Neil Diamond wrote most of them.

This was an abusive term in England at the time, so it got "Alternate Title" to hit the charts. Mentions Micky Dolenz's first wife, Samantha ("girl in yellow dress/being known as wonder girl")who he met on Top of the Pops. Terrific number.

You should read about a band before you talk shit. All 4 of the Monkees had careers in music before The Monkees deal came along. Mike was an accomplished singer/songwriter already, Peter had been in Greenwich Village and playing at clubs, Micky had been in a band previously, and Davy was on Broadway and a solo singer. Mike and Peter already knew how to play a wide variety of instruments, and Micky knew how to play guitar, but he had to learn how to play drums.
