I spent some time studying that particular bugaboo -- coming across Hofstadter's grandiose essay The Paranoid Style in the process. I have huge respect for Gore Vidal, HUGE. but he is a bitter old man, who's intelligence is getting the better of him. He is starting to think there is a massive global conspiracy and if you listen and read his work, he seems to be bordering on some form of insanity.
I do hope the man lives a comfortable life and we remember him for his earlier and less fearful work. (this is a gret interview though!)
