Poland-U.S. Missile Shield Deal

Poland has signed an agreement with America to establish a missile defense site in their country. But it's not getting built just yet. The deal still needs to be endorsed by the Polish parliament.
STORY:
Russia won't be impressed but Poland has formally agreed to host parts of America's global anti-missile shield. The country has signed an agreement with the U.S. following a deal made last week during the Georgia crisis.
[Condoleezza Rice, U.S. Secretary of State]:
"This is an agreement that of course will establish a missile defense site here in Poland. A missile defense site that will help us to deal with the new threats of the twenty first century of a long-range missile threat from countries like Iran or North Korea."
The U.S. Secretary of State may have named Iran and North Korea but Russia considers the shield a threat. They've vowed to take retaliatory action against Poland and fellow shield hosts the Czech Republic.
As a result America has had to promise to boost Warsaw's military defenses in return for the favor - much to the delight of Poland's president.
[Lech Kaczynski, Polish President]:
"This is a great success for Poland. I think it is also another step in the building of a global position for the United States, the most powerful country in the world now and probably for a long time. For me this is a day of success and satisfaction."
[Condoleezza Rice, U.S. Secretary of State]:
"This is a system that is defensive and is not aimed at anyone... It is nonetheless a system that establishes firmly again and reaffirms the strategic co-operation, relationship and friendship between Poland and the United States."
The deal still needs to be endorsed by Poland's parliament. But it's already being seen as a rare success for President Bush. He hopes the shield will persuade Iran to abandon its nuclear program - even though they insist it's for energy purposes only.
