Re: a), I'd prefer to hear operas in their original language, but I don't think artistic integrity is compromised when an opera is presented in another tongue. It helps reach a wider audience.
b) Nobody is mentioning her presence or charisma here. Her voice is darker than many other singers, but it's forward and resonant, esp in 1949.

If you don't like Callas, then stop listening to her! And what the hell does religious amalgamation mean? I'd accept that Isolde's love allows her her transcend the mortal plane of day into the spiritual plane of Schopenhauer-ian night, but she does not *become* an amalgamation. You don't *become* a religion unless you're the spaghetti god. You probably have a lot of angst, but please vent it privately with a razor and your wrist.

All this talk about her singing in Italian . . . I can't understand Italian or German, but I think the music speaks for itself. I didn't necessarily feel the emotion that I've heard from other performances, but this was still beautiful!

Her later 1957 interpretation sounds noticeably different than this performance. Not for lack of expression, but something in her tones (I think) - something seems off. I don't know if it was due to something or perhaps it was an off-night, but here Maria's voice sounds excellent.

He'd have had no problem with it at all. He wanted his audiences to understand the texts. If that meant them being translated into Italian, English or Urdu, then so be it. An don't use the language to make a swipe at Callas. In those days, Italian performances of Wagner were always sung in Italian.

This is utter nonsense, isn't it? Her 1-dimensional sound doesn't even begin to work for this. Not to mention, she treats it truly like an Italian bit, where the voice is above all primary. She doesn't blend with the orchestral excerpt in any way.

On a side note, I find it interesting that singing operas auf Deutsch was verboten, but singing the operas of an anti-Semite was still allowed. LOL Seriously though, I often marvel at the fact that such sublime, heavenly music could come from a soul such as Wagner's. Go figure! ;-)
