You have to give a mezzo soprano credit for even being able to sing this aria! Ms. Horne has an incredible range. Because of this, a few of the coloratura lines scale downward instead of upward, but still, very enjoyable.

Nope. At the time of Rossini every voice was capable of coloratura. The first interpreter was Righetti-Giorgi, a contralto with a range from F to high B. Rossini wrote transpositions for soprano as well.

I am not trying to be sarcastic or biting, but during the course of studying a degree in musicology I will say that many, MANY music history books (especially ones that are generalized books not specific to an era or styling) are full of misinformation and malinformation and just plain unfounded and undocumented information.

I've yet to find a singer that can seamlessly switch between registers where I, or most any trained ear, can't hear. Just think, it could be Ewa Podles. :-)

Her range was superhuman (top and bottom). What glorious sound! And when did she change registers? It's like a magician's trick, first she's in the top register, and then poof, she's gone elsewhere. Incredible. Marilyn was in a league all her own. What a shame I never saw her perform, and thank goodness for these recordings so we can still enjoy her.

She's never been my favorite. There is just something about this voice that I genuinely dislike. Something I can't put my finger on really. I do, however, appreciate that she is a fantastic artist with a very, VERY fine instrument. It's just not for me. 3/3.

She always did this "poh/poh"thing, and again adding two notes that were not written "poh- poh". She is always singing far more notes than the composer wrote. Her art.

Yes, and Mrs. Horne does that in a BIG and GREAT way! This was not a bad comment. A lot of people do not appreciate it. I like it but not for hours. Once, in Germany a journalist called her a "machine gun, shooting the audience with her notes. He ment it real bad, but I just loved that expression. For Horne it must have been a positive comment as well because a machine gun is absolutly legato and no mezzo in the world can explore so many legato ornamentations as Marylin.
