Sly Stone (vcl, gtr, keys), Rosa Stone (vcl, keys), Freddie Stone (vcl, gtr), Larry Graham (vcl, bs), Cynthia Robinson (vcl, trumpet), Jerry Martini (sax), Gregg Errico (drms). One of the best bands ever! Long Live The Family Stone! They never got enough credit for being absolutely stunning! A lot of music (like Prince & The Revolution) would have never existed without them.

The Edison/Mozart of Funk/RB conducts his orchestra,reinvents the "Funk Groove" & leaves us a legacy of totally original,multiple musician, meandering jam genius from his equal opportunity,inter-racial band of singers & players. The lyrics; barely veiled critique of the racial relations/political tension of the contemporary,post 60's social dynamic, dripping with sarcasm borne of 200+ yrs. of black subjugation & frustration.

Many don't appreciate or care about the significance/talent of this Genius. His cross-gender/racial performers & audience hinted at future racial harmony through infectious musical optimism. Coming on the heels of the turbulent 60's: Vietnam,Assassinations, Riots,& New Racial Segregation via Urban White Flight to the Suburbs, Sly's musical hybrid hinted at the future positive possibilities in the changing landscape of the 70's; regarding Sexual Values, Civil Rights & Pharmaceutical Recreation.

well said... he's so overlooked its not even funny... we're talkin about a music dynamo w/ talent on the level or surpassing a Prince or david bowie.. this guy could doing it all, production, writing, promotion, singing his ass off, playing any instrument. hendrix type imagination, but like jimi swallowed off the edge of earth by an ocean of dope. dont count him out, he may still have a card to play.

true on the theme & lyrics... even then many didnt know he wasnt thanking anyone.. this was all about disdain & anger at a system stacked in hate & oppression. his pointing out the endless loop of hates fist trying to pound freedom down.. its sees thru all the bs & realizes they either want u dead or as he says a mice & elf... flamin eyes burnin into u.. again, again & again.

My older brother Tito was good friends with the percussion player from the original Santana Band, Michael Carrabello, and met a lot of musical artist in the San Francisco area. One of them was Sly Stone! Sly was still an unknown back then. He was a disc jockey for a radio station KMEL ( I think ). Any way he told me years ago him and Sly and other friend ate Kentucky Fried Chicken in Sly's camper trailer. Thought I share this with you people. My brother Tito past away 10yrs ago. I miss him alot

I remember this episode of "In Concert" and the excitement we felt as the stage turned to reveal one of music's most controversial and innovative bands and its inimitable leader, Sly Stone. Blues, funk, rock, RnB, heck, its all there in Sly's music.
