While it was all a lie, what would we have prefered them to tell the kids? That when the atomic bomb goes off they'll all die?
In truth, this isn't really trying to scare people, its giving them a false sense of security, that an atomic explosion is just some big bully you can avoid. Its stupid, its a lie, but at the time the government saw no other choice.
I'm dissapointed in it all the same though. If anything they shouldn't have given people so much false hope. That was irresponsible.
