we were told it was him having an opium influenced dream, where he dreams his beloved has been murdered, and he is being blamed, and being marched to be hung. the idee fixe plays near the end, because he see's her face in the crowd.

actually he's not being depicted as hung, but rather being beheaded and the drum roll at the end is symobolizing his head rolling away

That's what it's about.
This movement, the hero dreams of going to the guillotine and the clarinet diddle near the end is him thinking of his love before the blade come down. Then the fanfares at the end symbolize the cheering of the crowd.

Well, the thing about it is the "story" I told was Berlioz's intention. I'm a music major and we've been studying Berlioz's music and life. Is it good or bad is subjective. If you want to find the true -intention- of the music, find the composer's history. There, you find why the song was written.

Actually, this one piece is suppose to represent a story. Hector Berlioz, when he first conducted his piece, gave the whole audience a program in order for them to understand them. This whole symphony is a love song. It was monumental because it was the first "program" piece to be made. So, no the story was the composers, not what we made. And this one is about him killing his love, and getting his head chopped off. -_- Tsk tsk, music major :P.

This song is amazing, Berlioz is my favorite Romantic Era composer. This song is amazing I particularly am found of this section as it's really powerful and graceful at the same time.

My college concert band played this last night, it's definitely not easy. I got stuck with the running cello parts, the bassoon solo, and the fast violin part just before 3:00. Absolute murder!!

hey man, i dont know who the hell you are, but you really need to do your research before you comment on this type of work, Berlioz was and is still to this day one of the most difficult composers to put together an ensemble for, because of some of his unique scoring, and demanding playing styles. so in other words, do your research before commenting.
