hmmm, My bad hey... I think it is a Great White Shark... why do they call them "White sharks" in America? I checked out the Monterey Aquarium home page... and apparently they do have a great white shark in captivity... and had one before that for 200 days...usualy great whites die in captivity.. I also never noticed great whites with the black markings on the tips of their fins, perhaps they do when they are just pups...

but those markings are a distinguishing feature of black tipped sharks... there's something amiss here, but I doubt the aquarium is trying to pass a black tipped shark off as a great white to bring in business... my bad, I'm sorry

I can't believe all of the people in here saying this isn't a Great White. Yes, that is Carcharodon Carcharias. You can tell by her deep and heavy spindle shaped body and the upper and lower lobes of the caudal fin are roughly equal in size. NO OTHER SHARK LOOKS LIKE THAT. It is NOT a black tip reef shark, white tip reef shark, or anything else. Those species belong to the larger Requiem Shark Family.

Previous attempts to keep Great Whites involved adults. Monterey Bay has had two young Great Whites in captivity, and they were eating. The difference in this case was that they captured young individuals, and made an enclosure for them out in the ocean, to get them used to that, and making sure they were doing okay before bringing them into the aquarium.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium kept at least two young adult Great Whites there on separate occasions and each time the shark was eventually released back into the ocean. They did fine in the tank, put on weight and grew pretty quickly.

This shark was eventually released. This aquarium has held this species in capitivity and kept them alive longer than any other. This is a difficult species to keep.

I heard there was a bull shark in the tank that was picking on it. Bullsharks probably kill more people than great whites. They swim up the Ganges, and eat tons of people that we never know about.
