Dear waltervh: Each to one's own tastes, of course. To my tastes and in my musical opinion, to which I am perfectly well entitled, these ladies are "not all that". I would not bar them from the theatre, but I personally would not pay to go see and hear them either. Peace. Out.

I agree. They both can sing but Ms Fleming is a rather discontinuous artist: here pronunciation is slurred and her -beautiful- voice sound in her mouth; Ms Bartoli has a fine diction and good vocal intentions but her voice is opaque to my ears.
I wouldn't boo them but I wouldn't pay to see them

Bartoli certainly serves the music well and understands totally what she is singing. Fleming a little less so. The voices are gorgeous nevertheless.

I prefer Dame Kiri and Ileana Contrubas. Go listen to it. Gorgeous. I have a CD of highlights from the Karajan performance (in mono) with Schwartzkopf as the countess and I definitely prefer Te Kanawa and Contrubas to that.

I saw this performance at the Met and it one of the most memorable ever. It is the only time I have ever seen Bartoli in person and her voice is amazing although her facial expressions are a little distracting, it doesn't take away from her voice.

The Golden Age of European singing encompasses Enrico Caruso to the retirement of Leontyne Price. My favorites are Caruso, Jussi Bjorling and Price. Also, Kathleen Ferrier, Janet Baker, Kirsten Flagstad, Marilyn Horne, Birgit Nilsson, Jessye Norman, Joan Sutherland, Leonard Warren, Robert Merrill, Beverly Sills, Renata Tebaldi, Zinka Milanov, Franco Corelli, Maria Callas, Luciano Pavarotti, Fritz Wunderlich, Nellie Melba, Feodor Chaliapin, Marian Anderson, others.
