i can't believe the tone and power in domingo's voice. just speculation, but i wonder if he changed his technique as he aged; perhaps because he was starting to sing too big and losing control. or maybe he didn't actually get to that point, but someone warned him about blowing out the pipes. oh well. i can't stop listening to this!!!

I am so amazed I cannot believe what I just heard. I love Placido, have always done, but I've never heard anything as amazing as this. I even like Caballé here.

domingo would not have blown his voice out. It is actually the opposite. He singing in this video with a much better body connction and open throat which results in a bigger sound. If you watch later videos he is putting more effort into his singing and pushing his voice way more but getting much less sound!

Both Monsterratand Placido are in 1972 at the peak of their art, a lesson of technique, beauty, interpretation and conviction! In a few words back then Perfection was audible.

Good grief, I never thought I'd say this about Domingo...but he is absolutely amazing in this performance! Singing with the correct technique, open throated, larynx lowered...whatever happened to him? He's wonderful here!

TOO many roles is what happened. boheme, romeo, otello and then a rigoletto in ONE month. balls my friend! singing so many roles in so many fachs eventually lead to his nasally top and upper middle registers and cautious singing throughout the mid to late 80's and 90's. BUT, prime placido is unmatched in voice and interpretations. there is a reason why SO many OLD school tenors tried to sabatoge this voice with cancellations (corelli)! this is PRIME placi! UNMATCHED in beauty and power!

Prime Placido was still transposing La Boheme back in 1967. He never had a solid top. As you can see here, he still sounds throaty, hooted, monochromatic and pushed. He never developed a good technique. Here, he is 31 years old and shows all the limitations of his voice and singing, which became worse as he aged and kept singing an overextended repertoire. This type of voice is not compatible with the beautiful Italian repertoire.

He didn't sing with the correct technique and stay stay in his fach for long... Recordings like this are rare. He shouldn't have changed his technique so dramatically or sang lyrical roles... He lost this glorious sound as early as 1977

Theinquisitivestupid, shut up your nonsense critic, his voice is amazing and her voice too. He sung high C and C sharp anyway it is known that Domingo is not a high C tenor. He is a Conductor, sung in many languages, sung Wagner play piano and sing in live performances and have the same vocal and musical delivery like Delmonaco.

I agree that prime Domingo was fantastic, but your comment about Corelli is quite uncalled for...Corelli was notorious for cancellations long before anyone knew the name Placido Domingo...it is simply ludicrous to assume that he cancelled just to ruin Domingo's voice.

i didnt make that up. domingo personally knows this as does EVERYONE in the business at that time. corelli didnt like placido and vice versa. corelli is the king of high C's!! C=cancellations!! but, corelli is ONE of the finest tenors ever. period.

Corelli was indeed the king of cancellations, but not because he wanted to destroy Placido's voice...my grandparents knew him a little and talked with him once or twice; he canceled because he was overly paranoid about the condition of his voice (i.e. 'my throat is a little sore, get someone else to sing for me tonight, etc.'). This is why one had a very good chance of getting a high calibre performance whenever Franco DID decide to sing.

He's a hell of a lot better than what we have today. Quite frankly, I'd be happy enough to have a singer as good as 70s Domingo today.

I'm not convinced there were very many other performances like this... I have a couple of performances performed within a year of this one, the 1972 Turandot is pretty bad and the 1973 Rigoletto is even worse.
I've yet to see another performance where he sounds as breathtaking as this.

Pretty amazing tone and volume from D (alhough he lacks control and phrasing, which could never have been said of his later singing). I suspect if he had kept singing like this the voice would have been worn out by 1979. By the way (and I apologise to all Caballé fans...) but doesn't she always sound flat at the top like renata tebaldi??? No one has agreed with me on this so it must be my ear...happy to hear if someone else agrees..

He looks very handsome here as well, doesn't he? And she too was actually rather beautiful, back in the day. A wonderful little performance - and so nice to hear the audience reaction at the end (so many Youtube clips cut off at the last note). Thank you for posting.
