Okay, Japanese Language time:
Blossom = hana
Ripe = juku shita
Rape Seed = natane / Seed = tane
Therefore it makes sense that nanohana = Rape Blossoms. It is a type of seed used to make oil. Rape seed oil = nataneabura (and yes, abura does mean oil).

Lucky Star tried to do that and was successful, but if you aren't a hardcore otaku like many of us, you wouldn't recognize references to Kanon, Da Capo, Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu, Code Geass, etc.
I liked PPD because it was more al-around, so you didn't have to have watched a lot of anime to get the jokes.
