Sorry....Your wrong! Been a drummer for 11 years!! Not a pro and I am a musician! I have prob got a better ear than most people here! So I think you should lay of drummers as I bet you prob can't play drums very well can you? Therefor it is just as hard as whatever you do! Idiot!

I also think I have spent more than 1 year , which 1 more year than you would know anything. If you listen to this closely you would know the mistakes in this. money cant buy talent either. and i will not take orders from you. I would stake up my talent and accomplishments to your 24-7 . Pherhaps you should learn about drummers, drums and music before you speak . try something new learn something from this . phil does write good songs though

Mistakes have NOTHING to do with groove and feel(or Music!!!) IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM!!! Also, theres not a prof musician that would ever hesitate to play with Phil. Music is an art form a feel a groove, you know...things that PRO drummers ARE. They are on another level above. You should PRAY HARD that one day you could be the drummer that Phil and so many are, and stop thinking that you are called to critisize Pro's when you are not yet at their level. Dont fool youself!

I agree with you. Drumming is just as hard - no doubt! My point is that Pro musicians should not be critisized by people that are not at that level yet! Period! That's all!

I don't know who the hell you think you are, but I know what I am. I'm a musician and a drummer. Maybe drummers don't play pitched notes and all that, but it's still music none the less. "Very few drummers" my ass! I know a lot of drummers who spent well more than a years "listening" in college. Judging by your talk, you don't even play drums. All you can do is bash on drummers. So why don't you keep your mouth shut!

I not bashing drummers, but obviously you cant read well. Im bashing drummers who are not a a professional level that criticize professionals, therefore are bad examples to younger drummers. They need to keep their mouth shut until they can groove like the pros, THEN they will know HOW to critique pro drummers with respect and respect the art of professional drumming and percussion.
In Addition, EVERY PROFESSIONAL DRUMMER ON EARTH WOULD BE HONORED TO PLAY WITH PHIL

It's not that Phil is a bad drummer...but he does not really drive the band and appears at times to be 'along for the ride' and maybe sometimes kind of out of it is all.....I prefer Vinnie Coliauta,Omar Hakim or Dave Weckl with the Buddy Rich Band.

It doesn't really matter what you think, coz no matter what, EVERY body is a music critic, pro or not, EVERY body has an opinion, and everybody wants to give their 20c worth. And everybody always overrates themselves. Especially people who think they're "qualified" to criticize. I'm a music student. I've been trained to critique. I've learned not to, because I'd rather ENJOY what someone else has to offer. If they want my opinion, no worries. But start to enjoy music...it's what it's for!!!

If you listen carefully, Phil is slightly behind the band at all times. In other words, he is about a "thousandth of a second late" on everything. He is not part of the group, he is following the group. It sounds like he is listening instead of meshing or leading.

I have a CD of this. Believe me Phil is on it. That bone solo is done by Rick Stepton, Buddy's all-time favorite. The thing with Phil is, he is not a driver like Buddy is. I mean, that's not him. His heart was 100% in this. He loved Buddy.

If you doubt Phil Collins's drumming skills, you should really have a listen to some older Genesis albums, such as "Selling England by the Pound", "A Trick of the Tail" or even "Duke" or some of the stuff that he did while in Brand-X. Phil Collins is an excellent drummer, who can play perfectly in odd meters (Apocalypse in 9/8, anyone?). But as some of you already said, he is not a jazz drummer, but you should be careful and you should not generalize. Mr Collins has drumming skills for sure!

You might be right, Zombbg4, but not everyone can play brilliant fills in 9/8 and not everyone can play them as brilliant while a rhythmically difficult keyboard solo is working against the 9/8 time signature, as in Apocalypse in 9/8.

I agree with some that this isn't a patch on the Buddy Rich version from the 60s (also on here...) but I'm not sure it is Phil Collins's fault! The whole band seems a bit under par and the sax solo is a bit.... grim? I thought the trombone was ok, but maybe a bit out of character? Maybe what the band really lacks is Buddy's discipline? I have a lot of Phil collins with bands like Brand X and he certainly can play jazz, but he certainly has a different feel to the great swing drummers...
