This show demonstrates the Spartans' extraordinary performance was as much due to Persian incomptence as their prowess. If the Persians used archers earlier instead of melee troops, they would've won with far fewer casualties; the Greeks had no archers and were sitting ducks.

They actually did use archers first. But the curve of the pass limited the numbers that could be brought to bear. The Greek armor and shield when set against arrow assault is nearly impenetrable against the balsa wood bows the Persians used. On the third day with persians coming on both sides the spartans advanced farther into the pass to buy time for the greek soldiers he told to retreat. The phalanx broken, leaving them more vulnerable to arrow fire.
