I think Horne is much better than Callas. She has flexibility and her singing so natural and powerful! When i listen Callas i can feel how hard for her to get sound of her throat.
Who cares about Horne sexual orientation? She is great!

Why her voice has a throaty sound? Her low notes have sometimes an artificial sound.
The pass of the voice is too important. l like her high notes though.

Her voice has that sound because she doesn't cover the sound like many modern day opera singers do. Her lower notes are somewhat artificial. She puts a very bright and heavily chiaro sound down there so her voice can cut through. Most mezzos just cover it up down there to sound "dark."

And that's absolutely fine. I don't try to make judgements. I just give some pedagogical input. Her voice is for some and not others.

Great to hear FINALLY the second aria of Arsace, and not the always sung 'Eccomi alfine'. A wonderful aria and a spectacular piece, sure, but this second aria is dramatically much more interesting... and listen to the music, oh my God...

Its late to answer...but...any way: Hope you understand italian: La voce di Madame Horne è "ingolata"...come molti cantanti d'opera...some people like that...others...not!!!!

mi piace molto. Non sono di accordo , non tutti cantanti di opera cantano con voce ingollata, pero ci sono molti in questo caso
Se a lei non piace la opera, e normale . E Meglio che ascolti altri cantanti. in francese si dice," tous les gouts sont dans la nature"

I did not say that all opera singers had "voci ingolata"...but some....yes. I am a tenor, a musician...of course, I don't like that. I think that the "principe frai tutti i tenori" ( cioé, Kraus) said , before he died, that the "tecnica pura" was to sing properly with " le cordi vere" non le " false e ingolate"

Con le corde false ed ingollate cantano molti contra tenore. Lei ha ragione . non si deve cantare cosi. per me una voce ingollata mi da affanno. Se lei e tenore, spero sentirlo presto in You-Tube,. Amicizia Joana.

qua ti sbagli perchè noi controtenori cantiamo "in voce", non "in falsetto".
e lo studio tecnico è molto più duro e difficile rispetto ad altri tipi di voce!
guardacaso un jaroussky o un cencic sono più udibili in un teatro che certe dive come una bartoli o una fleming. cosa ti fa pensare questo?
probabilmente le carenze tecniche non mancano proprio ai controtenori... anzi

Like Marx said about capitalism - she carried the seeds of her own destruction. There were virtually no coloratura mezzos before Horne. She inspired a whole generation singers like Larmore, Bartolli, Podles, Baltsa and Kasarova.
She had virtually no competitors when she began. Now she swims in an ocean of Rossini mezzos.
Yet somehow despite all the contenders she remains the champ.

La Horne has a timbre wich is totally unisex & she sung with many good used colors & the understanding of this stuff! And for me her coloraturas have been perfect on a good breathcontroll & assurance of giving evrthing out in tune & pitch! Not like Kasarova (she is many times under breath & boring like an old dog look at her face!) Larmore is a better than K. but not good enough! Bartoli is never professionell user on breathcontroll, easness! Bartoli sounds like a windblowing old parrot!
