ulan they dont renamed the city, ottomans named the city officialy "konstantiniye" means like the original "city of constantin" to honor the great roman caesar, the builder of the city. greek inhabitans changed first the name inofficialy, they named the city "stampoli", means in greek "going to city". turkish people added an "i" in spoken language. after republic, in 1930s new name oficialy declared like the spoken language: istanbul.
you know, this is not a ideal place to discuss history :P
