hey susejf! I can't do it any better, not even in the shower. I'm a baritone. So therefore am payed less for my 2&1/2 octave range because it's set a fourth lower. At least I, unlike some, seem to have a sense of humour about it ;-)

I have heard him three different times(once at La Scala and twice in Rome)and could hear him very well not only the high notes but the entire range oh his voice.He even bis the famous aria in Fille du Regiment in Milan.
Either the Italians do not understand bel canto or you need an ear doctor.

The conductor is probably a large part of why it's so boring... And the soprano is also absolutely awful.
The best live recording of this opera is probably 1972 in Philadelphia with Pavarotti and Sills.

I agree in part with you,Florez needs more refinement at least to sing this opera.
On the other hand Lauri-Volpi hits a great c sharp but all the rest is flat,terribly flat.

Lol, Freni the best Elvira?! I love her, but she is by no stretch of the imagination the perfect Elvira... LOL. And Kraus was far better in French opera; he, like Gedda didn't have the sweet Italian timbre that Pavarotti, di Stefano etc... Had.

I respect your opinion on freni but to assert that Karus was "better in French repertoire"...well
One of the greates conductors (Mro.Gavazzeni)defined Karus as the greaest Arturo he has ever heard and he knew a little more of music and singing than you and me.

He was better in the French repertoire, Gedda and Kraus are probably the greatest tenors to sing the French repertoire... You just have to listen to either of the to perform in Werther or Faust to hear it!
And it's only my opinion that Pavarotti was the better Arturo of course, and no amount of arguing will change either of our opinions. I guess we just have to agree to disagree.

I have listened to both of them in all the Frenh repertoire and to me Kraus was better than Gedda.
On the other hand I also listened to Pavarotti-which I greatly admire- at the Met in the late 70's with Sutherland in Puritani and he sang(beautifully)but all transposed down to a semitone.Kraus never did that ,and that is a fact not an opinion.
If we are talking about recordings then there is the caballe/Kraus with Muti conducting which is matchless in style and good singing.

True, Pavarotti only sang it with the Ds in his studio recording. It didn't bother me though, it is such a demanding role, and Pavarotti's vocal cords just didn't allow him to sing high Ds regularly I guess.

More than his vocal cords it was the heavy repertory that de did and for which he was not suited.
I do bother,it is question of style and musical harmony,if an aria or duet were written in an specific key by the composer it should be executed that way.
Having said that I love Pavarotti's singing and his voice had a unique color.I miss him terribly.
