when prophet Mohammad (Peace be upon him) died, then comes the question of chosing the leader, cz no group of nation of human or living beings can go on wihtout one. Majority of the muslims after the death chose a noble man, called abu baker. He's the first calif , he' not related to prophet in close terms of bloodline, these people are now called sunnis.

A handful or few people rallied for the cause that the closest person related to the Prophet ie :"Ali" should be the leader, and they dont just stop into it, they believe that after ali the whole further succession passes onto Ali's offsprings. like monarchy. sunnis only believe that any one, even a new convert from finland or iceland can be the leader to lead the muslim, given that he is virtous and pious, a goood person and a stuff required for a leader.

Shias on the other hand claim that the offsprings of Ali' are the only people rightful to lead, and they are ammune to mistakes, and that Allah have pured thier hearts and they came in this world any now they cannot do any mistakes what so ever, eventually they are the best ones to lead Islam.
